MAINTAINING YOUR BIG FOOT FLOORING

Maintaining your Big Foot Vinyl Floor will enhance your home and contribute to your health. Allergy sufferers are often told to sweep or vacuum flooring everyday to remove dust mites. Preventative maintenance is key to maintaining the quality and extending the durability of your Big Foot Vinyl Floor. Here are some tips from us:

CLEANING

  • Wipe up spill as soon as they occur.

  • Sweep or vacuum the floor thoroughly with a soft broom to remove all dirt and grit. Do not use beater-bar vacuum cleaner on the floor. Doing so will damage the floor.

  • Damp mop the floor using a clean mop. Frequently, rinse in clean water.

  • When necessary, mop the floor with a solution of clean water and hard surface cleaner. Do not use a wire or nylon scouring pads, power abrasive cleaners, bleach or strong detergents.

PROTECTING YOUR FLOOR FROM DAMAGE

  • Indentation marks from high pressure points, such as piano, washing machine and other appliances are common. Avoid this by placing a hardboard sheet, castor cups or an off cut of the vinyl floor on the pressure points.

  • Tear, scratch or scuff damage can result from dragging heavy appliance or furniture across the floor. Avoid this by placing a sheet of hardboard or an off cut carpet beneath objects before repositioning them.

  • Stiletto heels or sharp object will scratch or damage the flooring.

  • Hot or burning objects and thinner may scorch or blister the surface of the floor.

  • Prevent ground from dirt and grit by placing non-staining, natural fiber doormats at all external doorways.

PROTECTING YOUR FLOOR FROM STAIN DAMAGE

  • Rubber backing on doormats may result in yellow discoloration of the floor directly. Excessive dye from colored doormats may cause permanent color staining on the floor.

  • Rubber feet on furniture or bicycle tires may cause staining. To avoid these, place an off cut of the vinyl floor or felt pads between them and the floor.

  • Spirit based products (such as shoe polish, solvents, dye and permanent marker pens) will leave marks on the floor. Wipe up spots and marks as quickly as possible.

  • Corrosive substances such as acid and alkaline solutions can damage the surface of the floor. Clean up spills quickly and carefully avoiding direct contact with the substance.

  • Bitumen/tar from freshly resurfaced or melted roads and pathways, inexpensive black driveway sealers, some shoe with inferior rubber soles can also cause stains.

PROTECTING YOUR FLOOR FROM DISCOLORATION

Sun spots are another from of vinyl discoloration that occurs from direct exposure to sunlight or high heat. It takes a lengthy period of time for this to occur. Occasional exposure, such as sliding glass door being opened, will not immediately cause this. However, if the door is left open all day, this could allow the direct sunlight and heat to materialize and discolor the floor. Regular shading and keeping your vinyl floor out of direct sunlight will prevent this type of discoloration from occurring. We recommend installing day curtains or shades where sunlight may shine on the floor.

Following these simple guidelines will help to keep your flooring looking new.

It does not take a huge amount of money, just a bit of your time.
